Summer Shakespeare performances at Lake Walk Town Center.
BRYAN, Texas – Theatre revisits its ancestral roots of outdoor performances through Lake Walk Town Center’s addition of Shakes on the Lake. This summer, director Andrew Roblyer will bring Shakespeare’s The Tempest to life under Lake Walk’s open-air Pavilion. Performances are free to attend and begin at 8 PM on July 19, July 20, Aug. 2, and Aug. 3.
Shakes on the Lake seeks to provide Bryan/College Station with access to the arts in ways that are uncommon throughout the community. Minimal costuming and set design will foster an environment that highlights character relations alongside the natural backdrop of Lake Walk Town Center.
“There's really no better set than nature”, says Roblyer, performance director. “The lake, the trees, the beautiful sunset; they all remind me of the amphitheaters where theatre began thousands of years ago.”
Comprised of 20 cast members, only five of which being male, this season’s performances push the boundaries of classic roles. Overall, the cast offers immense diversity as actors include high school and college students, a doctor, a veteran, two librarians, a radio personality, teachers, and more.
“I'm excited to introduce people to Shakespeare that haven't seen it before, and make it accessible to those who feel that it isn't”, says Roblyer. “Most of all I'm excited to work with Lake Walk to bring our community together around art and storytelling!”
Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on the Pavilion lawn. Before the show begins, performance goers can enjoy authentic Texas cuisine at Campfire, The Stella Hotel’s on-site restaurant, located directly across from the Lake Walk Pavilion.
